Does food insecurity affect the people of Lenawee County?

By Laura Schultz Pipis
Have you heard of the term, “food insecurity?”
According to the federal government, the definition of food insecurity is “the disruption of food intake or eating patterns because of lack of money and other resources.” This is something the United Way takes seriously: Can people afford to eat?
According to a State of Michigan Food Security Council report, before the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 1.3 million Michiganders faced food insecurity, and now, an estimated 1.9 million individuals are food insecure in Michigan and 552,400 of them are children. This translates to a 38.2% increase in food insecurity in Michigan’s overall population, and for children, a 63.3% increase in food insecurity.

Broad Perspective: Pouring over 2020

Why did you want to own a coffee shop? You could have started anything, why coffee?
Why? Because of the community; because of what it would represent, bringing people together. I’ve always said to any staff member that I’ve ever hired that our team has an inclusive environment. Like when people come in, I want them to be welcomed with a smile, even if you’re busy doing something, you can still acknowledge the person. When people come here, I want them to feel warm and welcome. And that was a real driving force for me. It’s just a community kind of hub where people feel comfortable coming; they can meet up with friends, they can meet up with family, they can read a book, but then they can also get really great food and really great coffee and then carry on with their day.
