A bidirectional powder deposition strategy was employed to additively manufacture Ti–15Mo wt% using laser metal deposition. The as-built alloy was subsequently subject to post-fabrication heat treatment. Microstructural characterisation was conducted in the heat-treated state and also after uniaxial tensile deformation. X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were employed in the heat-treated state. Electron backscatter diffraction was used in investigating the deformed microstructure. Columnar β grain refinement was achieved by fragmentation from a combined contribution from precipitated phases and deformation induced products. The three distinct microstructural zones, namely the fusion, remelted and heat affected zones, observed in each deposited layer of the as-built microstructure were retained after sub-β-solvus heat treatment but completely erased in the super-β-solvus microstructure. "Void Formation and Crack Propagation in a Cr–Mn–N Metastable Austeniti" by Hamidreza Kamali, Haibo Xie et al.

Microstructure evolution via deformation-induced martensitic transformation, void formation, and crack propagation is investigated in a metastable austenitic Cr–Mn–N stainless steel for up to 90° bending using a combination of electron backscattering diffraction and parent grain reconstruction. Stress–strain heterogeneity and stress triaxiality studied using finite-element analysis reveal that the inner and outer radii are in approximately uniaxial compressive and tensile stress states, respectively, with the outer radius showing higher values for von Mises and principal stresses and equivalent strain. Voids are observed at both austenite/α′-martensite and α′/α′-martensite interfaces. Parent grain reconstruction applied to the 90° bending sample reveal that the cracks at α′/α′-martensite interfaces tend to propagate predominantly along intergranular parent austenite grain boundaries. A versatile generic framework for parent grain reconstruction from fully or partially transformed child microstructures has been integrated into the open-source crystallographic toolbox MTEX. The framework extends traditional parent grain reconstruction, phase transformation and variant analysis to all parent-child crystal symmetry combinations. The inherent versatility of the universally applicable parent grain reconstruction methods and the ability to conduct in-depth variant analysis are showcased via example workflows that can be programmatically modified by users to suit their specific applications. This is highlighted by three applications, namely α′-to-γ reconstruction in a lath martensitic steel, α-to-β reconstruction in a Ti alloy, and a two-step reconstruction from α′ to ϵ to γ in a twinning and transformation-induced plasticity steel.
