HCL Technologies sees continued demand from clients across sectors for shifting their applications to the cloud and for cybersecurity solutions, said its CEO, C Vijayakumar. Vijayakumar told ET s Surabhi Agarwal and Raghu Krishnan in an interview that being transparent in order booking due to the increased demand is a better metric than guiding specific numbers for the year ahead. HCL pays 16k staffers up to 30% of salary as skill perk


BENGALURU: HCL Technologies has offered a skill-based allowance of 25-30% of their CTC (cost-to-company) to about 16,000 employees. “These are skills where customers are paying a premium and we are passing it on to the employees. Over the years the number of people who qualify for this allowance has seen a steady increase. It’s a narrow segment, and that skill has to be in demand,” said Apparao V V, chief HR officer.
It introduced skill-based allowances some three years ago. The C Vijayakumar- led HCL has identified 25-30 hot skills.
“Based on 18 months data, we have geared up our engine in terms of certifying and training these people so that we can fulfil a large part of the demand internally. If 100 positions are required, we can fulfil 55 positions internally,” Apparao said. ....

BENGALURU: In 2020-21, HCL signed 58 new large deals with a total contract value (TCV) of $7.3 billion, an 18% increase over the previous year. In an interview with TOI, HCL CEO and president C Vijayakumar spoke about the demand outlook. Excerpts:
HCL has guided for double-digit growth this year. What are the drivers of demand?
The themes of growth remain the same. Customers are looking at two-three broad areas – how can they optimise costs, make their cost more variable, and that’s one set of operating model transformation they are doing. The second set of initiatives are around digital, whether it is modernising their applications, cloud migration, security, reimagining the supply chain, and enhancing customer experience. HCL Technologies posted underwhelmed earnings for the quarter ended March as both the topline and bottomline of the company missed analysts’ expectations.
The company’s consolidated net profit fell nearly 26 per cent on a quarter-on-quarter basis, whereas its consolidated revenues grew 1.8 per cent.
“FY21 has been an unprecedented year by all yardsticks.
