UN experts condemn conviction of Pakistan human rights defender and minority activist Idris Khattak

GENEVA (15 December 2021) – UN human rights experts condemned today the reported conviction of leading human rights defender and minority civil society activist Idris Khattak, who was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment following an apparent unfair trial by a military court in Pakistan.

Pakistan: Victims of enforced disappearance should not be discouraged from lodging complaints

GENEVA (10 December 2021) – A group of UN experts today called on Pakistan to halt the approval of an amendment to a bill criminalizing enforced disappearances that would harshly penalize families and other sources for reporting alleged cases.

Egypt: Human rights defenders held incommunicado, face spurious charges, says UN expert

GENEVA (15 July 2021) – A UN expert today expressed dismay at the continued widespread arrest and extended pre-trial detention of human rights defenders in Egypt, saying activists have been detained without warrants, held incommunicado and then accused of multiple spurious offences.
“Exercising one's right to freedom of expression, association or peaceful assembly is not a crime. Everyone has the right to promote and protect human rights. There is no justification for the actions being taken against human rights defenders by the Egypt authorities,” said Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.
This is the second time this year that Lawlor has addressed the targeting of human rights defenders in Egypt.

China: Shock at continued crackdown on human rights defenders and lawyers UN expert

GENEVA (16 December 2020) – A UN human rights expert today expressed dismay at the shocking treatment of human rights defenders and lawyers in China, saying they continue to be charged, detained, disappeared and tortured five years after the start of a crackdown on the profession under the guise of national security concerns.
“Since the so-called ‘709 crackdown’ began on 9 July 2015, the profession of human rights lawyer has been effectively criminalised in China,” said Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders*.
The UN expert cited the recent arrest and enforced disappearance of human rights defender and lawyer Chang Weiping as emblematic of the Government’s ongoing efforts to silence lawyers who have been outspoken about the deterioration of human rights in China.
