On Monday, Gov. Janet Mills and State Treasurer Henry Beck said about 40,000 checks sent out as part of relief programs during and immediately following the COVID-19 pandemic have never been cashed.

About 40,000 checks, equivalent to nearly 2 percent of the 2.3 million relief payments, remain unclaimed.

The state says more than $19 million in relief money has not been claimed

The Mills administration said Monday that 40,000, or 2%, of the 2.3 million checks issued by the state over a three-year period have not been cashed and are now being treated as unclaimed property.
