Panel urges option for longer hospital stays of county's mentally ill

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to show that the additional period of 30 days of involuntary hospitalization applies only to those who are found gravely disabled.
An advisory board is recommending major changes for care of Ventura County residents with serious mental illness, including the option to lengthen involuntary hospitalizations by up to 30 days.
Voting 16-1 last week, the county Behavioral Health Advisory Board approved sending a report with eight recommendations addressing patient care to the Ventura County Board of Supervisors. If the county government's procedures don't allow for the report to be placed on the supervisors' agenda, the advisory panel agreed to send the document to the five members of the board individually.
