Select committee hears submissions on bill proposing to ease creation of council Māori wards

The council is made up of two Māori seats and 12 general seats.
“It’s only been of benefit to our council...it’s increased our ability to work with iwi.” She said in the latest review held last year, “it was fully supported with council”.
Mahuta said the idea of “meritocracy”, where she could win purely on her merits in a rural Waikato constituency simply wouldn’t have worked for her.
“They are farming, they don’t vote for me, but they really like me anyway seven years later.”

Former National Party leader Don Brash told the committee that most Māori want no part in “race-based politics” such as separate council wards.

Nothing democratic about race-based wards — Don Brash

OPINION: Last week, your correspondent Dan Lander argued that those campaigning against the creation of one or more Māori wards in New Plymouth were “anti-Māori”.
He particularly singled out the Hobson’s Pledge Trust for attack, claiming that the organisation is “fundamentally against and actively works to thwart Māori representation in local government”. He noted that we had financed the printing of the anti-Māori ward petition in the North Taranaki Midweek paper.
Yes, we certainly did finance the petition promoting the need for a referendum of ratepayers before anything as radical as race-based wards is adopted, and we make no apology for that.
