The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Thursday projected traffic on the highway over the Memorial Day holiday will almost double to 2.1 million motorists compared to 2020, when travelling options were severely impacted by shutdowns and safety concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic. The agency anticipates an increase of 900,000 vehicles on the toll road from last year’s 1.2 million users between Friday and Monday. Mark Compton, the turnpike’s chief executive officer, said as more people begin travelling again, the agency became aware of some disturbing travel trends that pose risks. The trends became apparent through state police turnpike patrol citations, plus observations during turnpike patrols and by the agency’s maintenance staff, according to turnpike spokeswoman Roseanne Placey. ....

A female pedestrian was killed Jan. 4 after being hit by a vehicle just before the Somerset exit, troopers said. That vehicle fled eastbound. State police said the woman and a man got out of a vehicle stopped on the left shoulder of the highway at milepost 109.8 and crossed the road near the Somerset exit ramp. Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers said the couple was attempting to cross the highway to get back to their disabled vehicle when the woman was hit by another vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle likely will have damage to the front end, front corner and mirror, according to the organization. ....
