Expanded Geffrye Museum in east London reopens as Museum of the Home

Words by Francesca Perry
Home. It’s become even more critical, and interrogated, since the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic confined many of us to domestic interiors. Issues of culture, lifestyle, inequality and health all weave into the consideration and exploration of what a home is and can be, across history and around the world. It is this stark relevance and importance that underpins the revival of London’s Geffrye Museum as the Museum of the Home, opening on Saturday 12 June, now with 80% more exhibition space so it can interrogate these issues more thoroughly – and immersively.
An £18.1m renovation project led by Wright & Wright Architects has seen not only the expansion of exhibition space in the museum – which is housed predominantly in Grade I-listed, 18

Hoxton's Museum of the Home will reopen in May after a three-year closure and £18.1 million renovation.
Delayed for a year by Covid, the reopening will reveal a new visitor entrance, cafe, library and learning pavilion alongside revamped galleries to house the collection of domestic artefacts spanning 400 years.

The historic site was previously known as The Geffrye Museum because it is based in 18th century almshouses built with funds from Sir Robert Geffrye. But they were sold to London County Council in 1911 and the collection - and charitable trust which runs it - has no connection to the merchant who made his money from the slave trade and colonial East India Company.

V&A Dundee – club culture exhibition
V&A Dundee’s Night Fever exhibition will be one of the first shows to open in the UK, with Scotland coming out of lockdown earlier than the rest on 1 May. Appropriate too, that it will explore a world that most of us haven’t seen for more than a year: clubbing. Night Fever will delve into iconic clubs from New York, Paris, Florence, Manchester, London, Bierut and Berlin – as well as those in towns and cities across Scotland. The show will cover how the progressive and subversive history of nightclub design has influenced pop culture, from Studio 54 to the Haçienda.
