Collecting unemployment benefits during the pandemic could impact your tax refund

Collecting unemployment benefits during the pandemic could impact your tax refund

TAMPA, Fla. — As if 2020 wasn’t hard enough on our pockets, now tax season is near, and collecting unemployment benefits will impact your filings.
If you received a government stimulus check, tax experts say the good news is you won’t be taxed on it; but if you received unemployment, you may have to pay.
The unemployment benefits that helped so many Americans stay afloat during the pandemic may hurt them this tax season.
Many people rely on a tax refund to help them catch up with bills, but Rob DiMarco, CPA and owner of Tax Artist, says if you received unemployment benefits in 2020 and did not request they withhold taxes, prepare for a lower return and even the possibility of having to pay money in.

Taxes 2021: Tax filing season delayed until February, IRS says

Thanks to the pandemic and the push to get stimulus payments out quickly, the 2021 federal tax filing season will start a little late this year.
The IRS on Friday said it would begin accepting federal tax returns on February 12. Normally, tax filing season begins in the second half of January, CNN reported.
Pushing it back a few weeks "allows the IRS time to do additional programming and testing of IRS systems following the December 27 tax law changes that provided a second round of Economic Impact Payments and other benefits," the agency said.
The IRS notes, however, that people working with tax software companies, including IRS Free File partners, may prepare their returns now and they will be transmitted to the IRS starting February 12.
