Day 1 of the Women’s Candidates saw two decisive games (out of two), as Lei Tingjie and Humpy Koneru defeated Mariya and Anna Muzychuk respectively, both with the white pieces. Matches are played to the best of four, so the Muzychuk sisters have plenty of time to bounce back. Humpy’s victory was a nice 24-mover. | Photo: Michal Walusza
Following their losses on opening day, the Muzychuk sisters both faced the Petroff Defence on Wednesday. Mariya could not get much of an advantage in her game against Lei Tingjie and ended up signing a 40-move draw. Anna, meanwhile, got in trouble in a sharp struggle against Humpy Koneru, but managed to escape with a draw in the end. | Photo: Michal Walusza
