The mountain was too high to climb for the Maine Nordiques on Friday afternoon. Luke Mountain, a University of Vermont commit, had a hat trick as the Maryland Black Bears defeated the Nordiques 4-1 in a North American Hockey League East Division contest at the Ice World in Englewood, Maryland. It’s the second straight week the teams earned a split, as the Black Bears defeated Maine last Thursday. “We came in a strong positive frame of mind,” Maine Nordiques associate head coach Matt Pinchevsky said. “The best thing that could have happened to us today was giving up that first goal against because it woke everybody up and upped everybody’s senses a little bit.” ....
For the first time since November, the Maine Nordiques had a true road game. The Nordiques defeated the Maryland Black Bears 3-2 in a shootout Thursday in a North American Hockey League East Division contest down in Edgewood, Maryland. It was the first time the Nordiques traveled for a game since going down to Attleboro, Massachusetts on Nov. 12 to take on the Northeast Generals. The Nordiques played the Generals in Lewiston at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in December and again earlier this month in games where the Nordiques were considered the visiting team. The Ice World, where the game was played in Englewood, isn’t the Black Bears’ home arena. Matt Pinchevsky, Maine Nordiques associate head coach, said it was an event to just get ready for the games. ....
Michael Morelli was nearly perfect. The Maryland Black Bears goalie stopped 38 of 39 shots Thursday night in a 5-1 victory over the Maine Nordiques in a North American Hockey League East division contest at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. “We didn’t execute when he had some opportunities when we had some rebounds,” Maine Nordiques coach Nolan Howe said. “We have to a better job as a team battling through (adversity). They did a good job clogging up the middle of the ice especially their defensive zone. We have to fight through it and be better tomorrow. Morelli’s lone blemish was giving up a goal in the final two minutes of the game to Ty Matthews. It was Matthews’ first goal of the season. ....
