Egypt: Standing in solidarity with Ibrahim Ezz El-Din

Paris-Geneva, June 11, 2021 –On the second anniversary of Ibrahim Ezz El-Din’s arbitrary detention, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT-FIDH) calls for his immediate and unconditional release and urges the authorities to put an immediate end to all acts of harassment against human rights defenders in Egypt.
Two years ago, on June 11, 2019, Ibrahim Ezz El-Din was arbitrarily arrested in Cairo, after finishing workand having left the office of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF). For 167 days, Ibrahim Ezz El-Din’s whereabouts remained unknown for his family and colleagues, as the authorities consistently denied his detention. He at last reappeared at Supreme State Security Prosecution(SSSP)on November 26, 2019, where he was informed he was being investigated on accusations of “contributing to the achievement of the objectives of a terrorist group” and “publication of false information undermining national security” under Case 488 of 2019.

UN Member States urged to ensure counter-terrorism policies do…

Paris-Geneva, 25 May 2021
Excellencies,
The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, a partnership of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT), urges UN Member States to
urgently step up their action to ensure global counter-terrorism policies do not negatively impact civil society and human rights defenders.
Although human rights were given a central place in the UN Global Counter-Terrorist Strategy (GCTS), human rights organisations have extensively documented the minimisation and under-funding of human rights aspects of the strategy[1]. In addition, civil society and human rights defenders have remained sidelined
in an overwhelming majority of processes within the UN Counter-Terrorist Architecture[2]. This situation has led to

Open letter to the European Union and its Member States on Egypt

Dear High Representative,
Dear Foreign Ministers,
We are writing ahead of the January 25th Foreign Affairs Council discussion on Egypt to raise our serious concerns, once again, about the human rights crisis unfolding in the country, and to urge the EU and its member states to take the long overdue steps needed to signal that Egypt’s disregard for human rights will no longer be tolerated.
As we near the 10th anniversary of Egypt’s 2011 revolution, the hopes for freedom and human rights-oriented reform that led Egyptians to take to the streets almost a decade ago, have been shattered by years of brutal repression and a relentless crackdown on any form of dissent. In a letter sent to you nearly one year ago, international human rights NGOs urged the
