OFF THE BEATEN PATH: Monroe natives experience Iditarod Trail Race as volunteers
The city of McGrath is nestled along Alaska’s Kuskokwim River, sitting 138 miles west of Denali National Park and Preserve, and 272 miles southwest of Fairbanks.
McGrath s official website boasts that the only way to reach the isolated community is by airplane, “unless you’re crazy enough to drive a snow-machine or mush your dog team on the Historic Iditarod Trail.”
A few weeks ago, McGrath played host to twin brothers Adam and Oscar Bruck, as well as their fellow volunteers who ventured into the rough-and-tumble interior of the 49th state to assist the teams competing in the 2021 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
