Venture-capital firms have invested $40 billion in companies developing automated-driving technology since 2000, according to Pitchbook. Insider analyzed Pitchbook data to determine which VC firms have made the most investments in autonomous driving. Trucks Venture Capital took the top spot, with 20 investments in startups working on self-driving tech. The race to develop self-driving cars has attracted a slew of investments from venture capitalists hoping to find the next breakout startup. SHARE Nuro Inc. said today it has been granted permission to operate its autonomous delivery vehicles on California’s roads after receiving a permit from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. The announcement came just hours after Nuro said it had acquired a company called Ike Robotics Inc., a self-driving truck startup that focuses on delivering long haul freight. Nuro is one of the best-funded startups in the autonomous driving market, having raised about $1.5 billion in total, with its most recent $500 million funding round led by T. Rowe Price Associates in November. The company is doing things a bit differently than its competitors. Rather than build autonomous driving technology for standard cars and trucks like most other players are doing, Nuro has created a self-driving delivery vehicle called the R2 (pictured) that is noticeably smaller than a car and has no steering wheels or seats inside, just a cargo bay with capacity for about 400 pounds of go ....
