Bytedance, TikTok's Chinese parent, has delayed the roll out of its shopping platform in the United States, according to a report.

ByteDance employees accessed the data as part of an unsuccessful effort to investigate leaks of company information earlier this year and were aiming to identify potential connections between two journalists, a former BuzzFeed reporter, and a Financial Times reporter, and company employees, the email from ByteDance general counsel Erich Andersen said.

Some 19 of the 50 US states have now at least partially blocked access on government computers to TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd. Most of the restrictions came within the past two weeks.

The request on Tuesday from Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, and Republican Marco Rubio followed a Buzzfeed report saying the short video app permitted TikTok engineers and executives in China to repeatedly access private data of US users.

The watchdog head has written a letter to both Apple and Google warning about the security threat from TikTok, calling for its de-platforming.
