Another muskie caught in southern Lake Michigan deserves some perspectives and notes on earlier catches; plus the Stray Cast.

The unusual catch led to surprised witnesses.
‘‘I had some woman come up to me with a baby to take a selfie,’’ Remec said.
My favorite southern Lake Michigan muskie, so far, was one of 34-36 inches, caught and released by Greg Remec in the spring of 2017 near Adler Planetarium in Chicago.

Ben Dickinson, now Indiana’s Lake Michigan fisheries biologist, estimated it at 36 to 38 inches and 15 to 18 pounds. He guessed it was a Great Lakes muskie that came down from Green Bay or was from recent Michigan stockings.
As for where the latest muskie originated, Vic Santucci, Illinois’ Lake Michigan program manager, emailed: ‘‘Most likely Green Bay, but can’t say for sure without report of fin clips or tags. . . . My guess is that they will remain sporadic, as the main basin of Lake Michigan is not ideal habitat for muskie.’’

Perch fishing reopened Wednesday on the Illinois waters of Lake Michigan; but, at least for this shore angler, it was more about enjoying the morning and wandering the Chicago lakefront than catching perch.

Crunching the numbers and the dreams of salmon and trout on the Illinois waters of Lake Michigan back to 2020 and forward to this year.

I never thought I would see a year like 2020 on Lake Michigan.
Chinook and coho salmon records in Illinois stood unchallenged for more than 40 years but anglers came close in 2020.
I wondered what 2021 might bring (assuming the weather will break).
On June 20, 2020, Dale Rehus and Chris Ranney went out of Waukegan in Rehus’ boat, ‘‘Delirious’’ and set up on South Reef as the sun rose.
Then lost six straight big fish, until Ranney landed one on a meat rig on a downrigger. They estimated it at as a Chinook around 17 pounds. But when Ranney was prepping to clean it, all their friends said it was a coho. Ranney jumped on a scale with and without the fish and had 18.6 pounds, close to the Illinois record (20 pounds, 9 ounces) caught by Carry VandeVusse on May 24, 1972, in Lake County waters.

Answers to some questions on birds at feeders come along wondering about an odd perch and the release of the 2021 Singing Insects of the Chicago Region.

Things that made me wonder, then smile.
Fritz Plous emailed this month about a lack of birds at his feeder, which they had just put up 10 days ago after a two-year absence because of neighborhood rat problems.
“But there have been no bird visits and there is no seed on the ground underneath it,” Plous emailed. “My daughter said she saw a sparrow on it briefly this morning, but it flew away and has not returned.
“Our neighbor has always had a feeder and has always been successful at attracting birds. But yesterday she said, ‘Something’s wrong. This time of year, I always see sparrows, juncos, chickadees and cardinals, but this year I’m only seeing a few sparrows.’”

Tackling the question of crappie vs croppie in the fullness of the holiday spirit.

But others? Well.
Vic Santucci, Illinois’ Lake Michigan program manager, emailed, “I say crappie, as in row ‘crop.’ Sorry, old school.”
Last week in the obituary for Ed Mullady, I noted how he said ‘‘croppie’’ for crappie, and it made me smile. He even wrote it as croppie.
Enter Mark Brown, the erudite, ruggedly handsome (in a scholarly way) Chicago Sun-Times political columnist.
“I’m confused by the lead in today’s column,” he emailed. “I thought the correct pronunciation of crappie is croppie.”
When I suggested he join the 21st century on the favored panfish, he felt compelled to add, “I think you are wrong.”
