Queensland cafes, restaurants and pubs will soon have to use the state government s coronavirus check-in app or face penalties.
Just a month after launching the check-in Queensland app, the government yesterday announced it will be mandatory for most hospitality venues from May 1, to streamline contact tracing ability.
While it is a valuable tool for contact tracers, a civil libertarian has raised privacy concerns.
Here s what we know.
What s the app?
It came after other states, including New South Wales and the ACT, launched similar apps. ....

Covid-19: More efforts needed to convince elderly to register for vaccination, says Rina Harun

PUTRAJAYA: More work needs to be done to get the elderly to sign up for the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, says Datuk Seri Rina Harun.
The Women, Family and Community Development Minister said hesitancy and a lack of awareness were among the reasons why registration for vaccination among seniors was lacking.
Many old folks are not sure of the registration process. They need help with registering.
There are also many who are sceptical about vaccinations and prefer to wait and see .
They need to know that the vaccination programme is for the good of the people, she said at a press conference after launching the Konvensyen NGO 2021 programme on Thursday (April 1). ....

Vaccination formula: rapid vaccination could avoid lockdown even with rising infection numbers

Vaccination formula: rapid vaccination could avoid lockdown even with rising infection numbers
As it has from the beginning, the pandemic continues to primarily affect older people. If the entire population of Germany became infected with SARS-CoV-2, statistically 1.5 million of those over 60 would die; among those under 60, the death toll would “only” be 75,000. This is why – in addition to certain particularly exposed population groups – vaccination strategies often prioritise the elderly with the aim of avoiding overburdening the health system with severe COVID-19 cases and high death rates. After all, vaccinating just a quarter of the population can prevent 95 percent of deaths. ....

AstraZeneca ChAdOx1--19

Date Time
AstraZeneca ChAdOx1–19
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is closely reviewing reports of anaphylaxis after four cases were reported following the AstraZeneca ChAdOx1-S vaccine in the past 2 days in Queensland.
Anaphylaxis is a form of allergic reaction. It is a very rare side effect that may occur with any vaccine. The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) advice emphasises that people without a previous history of specific or severe allergy should be observed post vaccination for the recommended 15 minute period. Only those with specific allergies or a previous history of anaphylaxis may require vaccination in a facility with medical staff in attendance, and to be observed for 30 minutes following administration of a COVID-19 vaccine dose. This advice can be found at: Clinical Guidance on use of COVID-19 vaccine in Australia in 2021 (v2.0) (pdf,515kb). ....
