Science contributor. lori, what do we know about this recommendation that will be coming, apparently, according to the new york times, that we all get a third shot, a booster shot? lawrence, what we know is over time, successful immunization wanes somewhat. not terribly. people are still able to muster strong immune responses but it is diminishing overtime so there is much consideration to having a third booster. now, israel is already rolling out third boosters. they first did it for people over 65 and now it s down to people over 50. it looks like their goal is to eventually have all israelis triple dosed. and that s because they ve seen that the delta variant in particular seems to be able to infect people who have been double dose vaccinated and then a substantial amount of time has ....

Immunization, i think it s going to give really robust protection. that might be it for a while. we may not need annual boosters. this could be the third and done. let s hope that is the case. dr. reiner, while some americans are eager to get a third shot, millions of americans still haven t gotten their first shots. so are you concerned that this could make the vaccine hesitant even more hesitant? well, it shouldn t. i think the messaging from the cdc should be that we have excellent data showing that a third shot of particularly the mrna vaccines produce really a very robust immune response. and as my old friend and colleague dr. hotez said, it s also possible that this third dose will actually create a much will longer-lasting immunity. so i think this should be both reassuring and should underscore the need for folks in this country who have not been vaccinated to start the process now. get your first shot now. ....

Exactly. but, obviously, if we had massive levels of immunization of our population and it had already happened by now, we would be in a very different situation. the united states is a breeding ground for new forms of virus. because we have a substantial percentage of our population that is not vaccinated and what this really means, rather than thinking of it as, oh, those people that aren t vaccinated, which leads to a lot of animosity, tension, you know, exacerbating difficulties in our society, think of it this way, there s a lot of virus out there. virus needs homes. homes are human bodies. there s a lot of human bodies unprotected, a lot of virus circulating around. it means that it has lots of opportunity to mutate, spread and put everybody at risk. laura garrett, thank you very much for joining us once again tonight. we always appreciate it. thank you. ....

Recommended. what is the data behind all of this? and have we zeroed in on how long vaccines are effective? i think it s important to remember if you remember back in january, december, january when these vaccines were first rolled out, we were at a terrible place. we were losing 3,000 american lives every day. there was the urgency to vaccinate the people as quickly as possible. the phase three were two to three weeks apart. en that was done for expediency. but for long term durability of protection, a boost that comes three weeks of after the first immunization is not great at doing that. and so when we saw what was going to be rolled out, a number of us thought there is going to be a need for a booster later on, whether it s a year afterwards or eight months afterwards or 16 months ....
