THE government is ramping up measures to thwart the Indian variant of the coronavirus that is believed to be killing tens of thousands daily during the current surge in Covid-19 cases in the South Asian country, according to presidential spokesman Harry Roque.
Under new guidelines issued by the government, all Filipino and foreign travellers arriving in the country starting Friday will be required to spend the first 10 days of a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a government accredited facility.
They will be swabbed twice on the seventh day to provide samples for genome sequencing to identify the variant in those found positive for SARS-CoV-2. Those found positive will be taken to hospital.

COLOMBO (News 1st); A COVID-19 patient with Indian Variant was detected from a Quarantine facility in Sri Lanka for the first time, said Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, the Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayawardenapura on Saturday (08).
“A person infected with the B.1.617 variant of the coronavirus, which is spreading in India, was reported from a quarantine center in Sri Lanka in a genetic sequencing test conducted on samples of COVID-19 cases,” he told News 1st.
Dr. Chandima Jeewandara went on to note that samples containing both the Indian and South African variants were detected in tests and of these samples were from those who returned from overseas.

Sri Lanka on Saturday detected its first case of the Indian variant of coronavirus, also known as B.1.617, in a person who recently returned from India and was in a quarantine centre here. The Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayewardenapura here in a report released on Saturday said the infected person had returned from India and was found at a quarantine center for returnees in Colombo.

Public Health England (PHE) has declared a coronavirus variant, closely related to the Indian Variant (B.1.617) as a Variant of Concern. While such a labelling is specific to the United Kingdom as scientists there are seeing the variant making up a growing proportion of cases in the United Kingdom, it is more aimed at alerting health authorities all over the world to the threat the mutations on the variant pose to the future evolution of the pandemic.

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry (MOH) is in talks with the Defence Ministry to set up field hospitals in Kelantan and Sarawak, says Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.
He said there was a need to set up field hospitals to accommodate patients unrelated to Covid-19, so that the burden of hospitals dealing with Covid-19 cases could be reduced.
“We find there is a need to set up field hospitals, like in Tawau and Kelantan... so discussions are in progress for the Defence Ministry to build them.
“The existing hospitals, especially their critical and intensive care unit wards, can be used or focused on dealing with the increase in Covid-19 cases, ” he said at a joint press conference with coordinating minister of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme, Khairy Jamaluddin, here yesterday.

Coronavirus News LIVE Updates: India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 2 crore mark with 3,57,229 infections being reported in a day, while the death toll increased to 2,22,408 with 3,449 new fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday. The total tally of COVID-19 cases in the country has climbed to 2,02,82,833. Registering a steady increase, the active cases have increased to34,47,133 comprising 17 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 81.91 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1, 66,13,292,while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.10 per cent, the data stated. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of 1.50 crore on April 19. According to the ICMR,29,33,10,779 samples have been tested up to May 3with16,63,742samples being tested on Monday.

In a new study, scientists at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-National Institute of Virology have found that Covaxin demonstrated potential effectiveness against the Brazil variant of SARS-CoV-2.
This was announced by Biopharmaceuitcal company, Ocugen, Inc.
Ocugen is developing Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech`s Covaxin for the US market.
"As previously disclosed, a study conducted by ICMR also suggested that Covaxin was effective against the UK variant, as well as the Indian double mutant variant," Ocugen said in a release

News that Uganda has registered the Indian Covid-19 variant is frightening. Col Dr Henry Kyobe, the Covid-19 incident commander, revealed that the country has now registered five Covid-19 variants, namely Uganda, India, Nigeria, South Africa, and UK strains.
He said the UK, South Africa, and India variants are more transmissible and mainly affect a younger age group (“Uganda confirms Indian strain”, Daily Monitor of April 30.)
India is currently battling an overwhelming number of Covid-19 infections with shortage of oxygen, medicine and hospital beds plaguing the country.

VIJAYAWADA: There is no need for people to panic over the reports that the N440K variant of Covid-19 is more virulent than other known variants of coronavirus, experts noted. 
The N440K variant is the reason for the sharp spike in new infections in Andhra Pradesh in last few weeks.

A forum of scientific advisers set up by the Indian government has told authorities about minor mutations in some samples of the coronavirus that could "possibly evade immune response" and require more study, a leader of the forum has told Reuters.
However, the advisers said while they were flagging the mutations, there was no reason currently to believe they were expanding or could be dangerous.

HANOI, April 30 (Reuters/AFP): Vietnam said has announced that it had detected its first locally transmitted cases of the coronavirus in 35 days, as authorities ordered tighter surveillance to prevent a new outbreak.
Four members of a family in northern Ha Nam province and one person in southern Ho Chi Minh City were infected, the health ministry said, having all been in contact with an individual who had returned from Japan and tested positive, despite clearing quarantine.
