Texans 50 and older eligible for vaccine on Monday

AUSTIN — Texans age 50 and older will be eligible to receive the Covid-19 vaccine beginning March 15, state health officials announced Wednesday.
“Expanding to ages 50 to 64 will continue the state’s priorities of protecting those at the greatest risk of severe outcomes and preserving the state’s health care system,” said Imelda Garcia, Department of State Health Services associate commissioner for laboratory and infectious disease services and chair of the Expert Vaccine Allocation Panel.
The move to expand eligibility to a new category of Texans — labeled 1C — means that vaccine availability is ramping up across the state. However, appointments may continue to be hard to find, as the number of eligible recipients outnumbers the vaccine supply. Before the Wednesday announcement, between 10 million and 13 million people — more than one-third of Texas’ population — were already eligible, according to state health officials. ....

365 days of COVID-19 in Mesa County

COVID-19 first arrived in Mesa County exactly one year ago today.
Over those 365 days, Mesa County has seen more than 150 people die after testing positive for the coronavirus.
However, as Mesa County enters its second year living with the virus, vaccines are outpacing total infections, hospitalizations have plummeted and events that were totally shut down last year are readying to return.
On the occasion of Mesa County completing a full trip around the sun with COVID-19, The Daily Sentinel spoke with area officials on what they remember from the past year, and what they see going forward. Those stories can be found throughout today’s edition. ....

Kuhr looks back at Health Department reaction, lessons learned

Jeff Kuhr’s year could have been worse.
As the head of the Mesa County Public Health Department and being the front-line guy dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic here, Kuhr could have faced far more obstacles, as many of his counterparts have in other parts of the state and nation.
Sure, Kuhr and his staff received plenty of angry phone calls and emails over their handling of the pandemic at times, but nothing like the death threats and angry protests outside his own home that some others have seen elsewhere in the nation.
But, in looking back, all-in-all things went as smoothly as one could expect dealing with the greatest public health scare of his 18-year career as a public health director. ....

COMMENTARY: We must protect Sunshine Laws

If you’ve been to a government meeting or read a news story about one, you might have heard of an executive session. An executive session is a portion of a government meeting that can be closed to the public.
The Texas Open Meetings Act outlines when a government can take its discussions behind closed doors. Exemptions to open meetings in Texas include consideration of specific personnel matters; certain consultations with attorneys; discussions about the value or transfer of real property; discussions about security personnel, security devices or a security audit; discussions about a prospective gift or donation to a governmental body; discussions by a governing body of potential items on tests that the government body conducts for purposes of licensing individuals to engage in an activity; discussions of certain economic development matters; discussions of certain competitive matters relating to city-owned electric or gas utility for which the city council is the govern ....
