13 apply for 3 school board seats in Roanoke

Thirteen Roanokers have applied for three open seats on the Roanoke School Board, including educators, attorneys, a doctor and an assistant city manager. This is the largest number of applicants the city has received since 2017.
The board is guaranteed to gain at least two new members on July 1. Laura Rottenborn, chief of the Western District of Virginia’s civil division, did not reapply for a third term. Dick Willis, an industrial digitization leader for Trane Technologies, is ineligible for reappointment because he is serving his third and final term.
The third seat is held by attorney Mark Cathey, who has served on the board since 2015 and has reapplied for a third term. Cathey was previously the board’s vice chair and chair. ....

Democratic lawmaker issues statement after House State Affairs kills Powerball in Idaho

BOISE — On Wednesday, the House State Affairs Committee killed legislation allowing the Powerball lottery game in Idaho. After the 10-4 vote, Rep. Chris Mathias, who voted against the motion leading to the defeat of House Bill 72, issued the following statement:
“You’ve probably read (thanks to some unclear reporting that deserves a clarification) that I voted with Heather Scott today to kill the Powerball. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I made a motion to send the bill to general orders so that it could be amended to overcome objections from the majority, and perhaps pass. In a quote taken way out of context, I explained my rationale for making that motion and justified the tweaks to the language.  ....

Eastern Oregon University radio station may go silent

LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University’s student-run FM radio station, KEOL, may go silent after the school year.
KEOL is receiving $33,481 in 2020-21 from the university’s Student Fee Committee and asked for $33,606 for 2021-22. But the committee voted not to fund KEOL in 2021-22.
“It was a very tough decision,” said Keegan Sanchez, vice chair of the Student Fee Committee and Eastern’s student body president.
The Student Fee Committee, which voted to defund KEOL on Feb. 5, determines how much money from student incidental fees is to go to 20 student organizations and programs on campus. The student senate earlier this week approved the recommendations. They must next receive the approval of EOU President Tom Insko and EOU Board of Trustees. ....

District D: You pick

After meeting with Greg Haitz and Dennis Simpson, the Sentinel’s editorial board could not reach a consensus on whom to endorse in the Grand Junction City Council District D race.
Both candidates are well-qualified, knowledgeable and have the relevant experience to hit the ground running. But that’s not to say voters can’t get this one wrong. Some on the board fear Simpson’s presence on the council could be a major disruption, while others appreciate his reason for running — which is to try to reshape how the city government operates.
Haitz, meanwhile is a local chiropractor who runs his own business, the Rimrock Wellness Center, and seems most concerned about the council’s relationship with the business community. In the immediate term, that means helping small businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. But Haitz repeatedly referenced the need to reexamine impact fees, giving some hint about where his priorities lie. ....
