Missouri Firefighter Memorial remains unfinished due to lack of funds


KINGDOM CITY - A red brick building along I-70 may look finished from afar, but inside the interior work remains undone.
The shell of the Missouri Firefighter Memorial was completed in 2019. That occurred when the Firefighter Memorial Board, the planning committee for the project, raised enough funds to finish exterior work. Now the board is trying to raise somewhere from $250,000 to $300,000 to complete the interior.
“We know that will happen,” Ken Hoover, Firefighter Memorial Board member, said. “The thing that has delayed us is everything else is kind of sidestepped because of COVID. It s real hard to go out here and raise money and sit and talk to people or sell chances to a raffle when you can t meet face to face.” ....

A.L. Brown grad named Chancellor of Fayetteville State University

Darrell Allison, a 1990 graduate of A.L. Brown High School, has been named the 12th chancellor of Fayetteville State University, the school announced in a news release.
Allison has been serving the University of North Carolina Board of Governors since 2017 after being nominated by UNC System President Peter Hans. He is currently the vice president of governmental affairs and state teams at the American Federation for Children.
“Darrell Allison is a creative leader who understands the value of Fayetteville State University to the community, the region, and the state,” Hans said in a news release.
He continued: “Darrell’s expansive career in education and service to the UNC System has been important to this state, and especially our HBCUs. He brings with him a proven track record for student advocacy and a reputation for fostering partnerships that can further this university’s strategic goals. Through his leade ....

Travis Brooks running for County Legislature


Community advocate  Travis Brooks, has announced his candidacy for Tompkins County Legislator in District 1. “I want to be the voice at the table that represents the entire community because I ve lived their experiences. Their stories are my stories, my voice is their voice, and their struggle is my reason.”
Brooks’ announcement comes after veteran Legislator Leslyn McBean-Clairborne announced she would not be seeking re-election. Legislator McBean-Clairborne was the first African American to represent District 1 and her impact has been profound.
