School board abruptly adjourns over mask dispute

Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting was adjourned just moments after starting because a woman refused to wear her mask.
Board President Tom Parrish began the meeting promptly at 6 p.m. before asking audience members to wear their masks. Jacqueline Anderson refused, claiming that she has a medical condition.
A back-and-forth ensued before Parrish adjourned the meeting two minutes after it began. Audience members then began arguing with Parrish from across the room before things settled down.
The district provided Anderson with a face shield, which she agreed to wear so that the meeting could continue.
“It’s extremely frustrating that when you know what your rights are and people try to bump up against that,” Anderson told the Daily Sentinel. “If he hadn’t been so rude to me at the beginning and talking to me like a child and was being polite, we probably could have figured out something and avoided this.” ....

School board finalizes one sale, approves calendar

Teton School District 401 Board of Trustees held their March meeting on the evening of March 8. In addition to an update on Covid and confirming that students and teachers will continue to wear masks to prevent the spread of the pathogen in schools, the board discussed a few other topics.
• The district’s property for sale in Driggs has been sold, and the transaction is complete.
• The property that is currently under contract in Victor is contingent on the approval from the city planning and zoning commission for a zone change. The contract is legally binding, and the board confirmed that while they are aware of a second offer on the property, they are bound by Idaho Code 33601 to prioritize the current offer. If the current offer does not go through because the zone change is not approved, the district must then re-appraise the property and again accept sealed bids. Only if they receive zero sealed bids would the property again return to the open market. ....

Indian Country welcomes Haaland to Interior

ROB CHANEY
PABLO — Minutes before the start of a Tribal Council meeting, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Chairwoman Shelly Fyant took a moment to consider the confirmation of Deb Haaland as Interior Secretary.
“It gives me chills,” Fyant said. “Grandmothers all over the world are talking about the shift the world has taken — to have a Native American and a woman to serve an agency that hasn’t always done the greatest job in Indian Country.”
Overcoming opposition led in part by Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines, Haaland earned a 51-40 vote in the Senate on Monday to join President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. As Interior Secretary, Haaland oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, Indian Water Rights Office, Fish and Wildlife Service and other departments that have a direct impact on the Flathead Indian Reservation. ....

Mining our future

In-state companies encouraged to use Minnesota-mined minerals
A resolution introduced by an Iron Range legislator in the Minnesota House of Representatives calls on Minnesota technology and medical companies to utilize Minnesota-mined minerals when manufacturing products.
“What we need starts with us mining the critical minerals in northeastern Minnesota,” Rep. Spencer Igo, R-Grand Rapids, said of his HC 6 resolution. “It (the resolution) encourages Minnesota businesses to innovate and work with the mining companies to field and produce their products here.”
Northeastern Minnesota minerals such as iron, copper, nickel and others, should be mined under high environmental standards and used domestically, Igo said. ....
