Coronavirus: Kenya receives 1 million vaccines from COVAX


 
NAIROBI, KENYA
Kenya has received just over 1 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine in the first batch from the global COVAX initiative that was created to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have fair access to vaccines.
Some 1.02 million doses of the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine, manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, arrived in Nairobi early Wednesday, according to a joint statement from UNICEF, the World Health Organization, international vaccine alliance GAVI and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations.
Kenyan Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe expressed excitement and optimism that the vaccines would help stop the spread of the coronavirus that has forced the East African country to partially lock down its economy with devastating consequences for many citizens. ....

Health-care settings do not increase risk of coronavirus infection: study


The study looked at survey data from roughly 25,000 health-care providers in Baltimore, Atlanta, and Chicago. In addition to coming in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, researchers found that living in an area with a high COVID-19 infection rate is a stronger risk factor than being in a health-care setting.
The same findings may also apply to those visiting hospitals for emergencies or regular appointments amid the pandemic. However, the researchers only analyzed the data as it related to health-care personnel.
Co-author and CDC infectious disease specialist Sujan Reddy says the study suggests that the highest risks to health-care workers may be exposures in the community. ....
