Coronavirus: China pioneers 'virus passports' as EU gets Russia jab boost


 
BEIJING
China has launched a system of so-called virus passports to kickstart international travel, as Russia sealed its first deal on Tuesday to manufacture the Sputnik V jab in the European Union.
Other nations like Brazil and Mexico are still struggling to get the pandemic under control, although there was a glimmer of hope from the OECD as it raised global economic growth forecasts for this year.
Chinese citizens can download the new certificates and use them to enter and leave the country, with the foreign ministry saying the system was intended to help promote world economic recovery and facilitate cross-border travel . ....

Coronavirus: Ripple effects of loss creating hard-hitting 'grief pandemic'


 
The pandemic is taking a devastating toll, with more than 22,000 deaths in Canada among more than 2.6 million who have died with the disease worldwide. But even as the rollout of vaccines fuels hope it may soon be over, the impact on people grieving the loss of loved ones will continue long after.
Rebecca Soffer is the co-founder of Modern Loss, an online publication and platform for individuals living through grief. She is also the co-author of the similarly titled book, Modern Loss: Candid Conversations About Grief. Soffer spoke to CTV’s Your Morning to talk about the “grief pandemic.”
According to Kaiser Health News, it’s estimated that, on average, nine people are left in grief for every death. That’s an estimated 200,000 people in Canada who are grieving deaths from COVID-19. ....

Katharine Dunn got really worried about her son Nolan even as his doctors told her she shouldn t the 13-year-old s fever was just a virus.
He didn t have a sore throat or cough. His COVID-19 tests came back negative, twice.
Then what had been a low-grade fever crept up to 104.4.
That s when I knew something was really wrong, she said. Some people s children spike those types of fevers, my kids never do.
Talking it over with her dad, he reminded her a friend s child had a weird syndrome called MIS-C that stands for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.
Doctors don t know what causes it. Often kids have COVID-19 first, but not always. The novel coronavirus doesn t usually cause severe disease in children, but for those few kids that do go on to develop MIS-C, the condition seems to inflame different parts of the body, and it can be serious. ....
