Something is circulating in the air and/or water in our state legislatures again. My evidence is that various local solons seem to be losing their minds. We begin in Tennessee, where an argument unseen in that state since 1860 suddenly erupted again. Rep. Justin Lafferty (R-Knoxville) arose in the Tennessee House to argue the upside of the Three-Fifths Compromise that was embedded in the original Constitution. Bowden, Henry M. (1819–1871) – Encyclopedia Virginia


Henry Moseley Bowden was born on April 10, 1819, in James City County, the son of William Bowden and Mildred Davis Bowden, and he grew up on his father’s farm near Williamsburg. As a young man he engaged in farming and built houses. On December 24, 1839, he married Elizabeth A. M. White. After her death he married Esprella Eugenia Ann Ware on December 23, 1841, and they had one daughter. Sometime after his second wife’s death on April 17, 1850, Bowden was married a third time, to a widow, Henrietta Susan Stevens Stubblefield. Their one child, George Edwin Bowden, served in the U.S. House of Representatives. ....

Carlile, John S. (1817–1878) – Encyclopedia Virginia


Early Years
John Snyder Carlile was born in Winchester on December 16, 1817, and was the only child of Jonathan Carlile, a lawyer, and Elizabeth Snyder Carlile. Contrary to an accepted family tradition that Carlile’s father died when he was young, Jonathan Carlile was an abusive alcoholic who squandered his wife’s inheritance and whose conduct forced the family to move frequently. After he deserted his family in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Carlile returned to Hampshire County, where she operated a school. On December 17, 1833, she petitioned the Virginia General Assembly for divorce, and after that request was rejected she obtained a judgment of divorce in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on August 22, 1836. ....
