The need to protect undersea infrastructure has become more keenly felt since the Nord Stream gas pipeline attack in the Baltic Sea last year.

Google will take part in a combined US-Australian plan to set up undersea cables to connect eight Pacific Ocean countries to the internet. The agreement is expected to be unveiled during Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's visit to the White House. The Australian and American governments will each contribute $15 million and $50 million, respectively. The project also offers aid with cybersecurity and data backup to international cloud networks.

The deal will expand an existing commercial project by Google in the region to the nations of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The pilot project is being undertaken in partnership with Safaricom at six unspecified locations within Nairobi.
