The South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks announced that zebra mussels, which have moved into lakes in the state, have now been found in moss balls that are sold at local pet stores for use in fish aquariums. They have been found in South Dakota as well as across the country.

Alberta’s government is asking anyone who purchased moss balls after Jan. 1 to destroy and dispose of them.

Live zebra mussels, which are an invasive species, have been discovered in moss (marimo) balls, a spherical, plant-like algae commonly sold at pet and garden stores throughout North America, including in Alberta.
Albertans should destroy moss balls by freezing or boiling them, then placing the moss balls in a sealed plastic bag and disposing of them with their household trash. Moss balls, and any water they were in, should not be flushed down the toilet, put down a drain or placed in a compost. ....

The popular fish tank décor item moss balls have been found in pet stores to contain zebra mussels in them. Maine IF&W describes zebra mussels as one of the most invasive species in North America. They go on to explain that the zebra mussels are being found buried inside moss balls commonly sold under the name Beta Buddy among other common names.
They say that if you have purchased moss balls for your fish tank recently you need to destroy them immediately. You can do so through one of several option. First you can place them in a sealable bag and put them in the freezer for 24 hours. Additionally you can place the moss balls into boiling water for at least one minute. Finally, you can submerge the balls of moss into chlorine bleach for at least twenty minutes. ....
