Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has justified the proposed overhaul of criminal laws in India, stating that the current laws were imposed by the British. He argued that India should have its own legal system based on "Indianness" and suggested renaming the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. The bills introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah, which aim to replace the IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act, have been referred to the Standing Committee on Home Affairs for recommendations.
