Councillors had earlier rejected a motion put by Councillor Brian Stockwell to go back out to community consultation before deciding if it would accept applications for category one events of greater than 10,0000 people. Noosa Triathlon and sports multi-fest organiser Ironman Oceania will be able to apply for the late October multi-sports event permit, which pumps millions of dollars in the local economy. Any successful application will have to meet the Queensland Health Covid Event Framework and any "locally relevant factors" raised by the council's health experts. Entries usually go on sale in late October/early November. In 2017, places for the epic Olympic distance swim, run, cycle sold out in less than 10 hours. Diehard Noosa triathletes who along with supporters annually pump millions of dollars into the Sunshine Coast economy have been unable to enter the 2021 Tri.
"It is such an important decision that has implications across the shire," Cr Stewart said. "Councillors highly value the views of residents and stakeholders, which is why we plan to consult the broader community. "An update report was due in February, but will be deferred to allow this consultation to take place."
