The French Film Festival in New Zealand has had a bit of a chequered history in recent years with changes of ownership and management as different operators attempted to run a profitable event with dwindling sponsorship resources. Last year the festival hit a perfect storm of Covid lockdowns followed by what you might call ‘auditorium reluctance’ on the part of its core audience even after cinemas reopened.
This year the festival returns in much better heart. A new organisation is presenting the event across the country and there’s a new festival director, Fergus Grady, who seems to have rounded up a decent array of titles from the carnage of Covid-era global film production. In fact, it’s the usual mix of costume epics, cop thrillers, romantic comedies and meditations on class and ‘Frenchness’. The French Film Festival has always been a crowd pleaser, and this year really is no different. ....

ON June 18, 1940, the BBC provided four minutes of airtime for French general Charles de Gaulle to address the people of France. 
De Gaulle had recently been promoted to brigadier general and named as Under-Secretary of State for National Defence and War by Prime Minister Paul Reynaud during the German invasion of France.
There had been no advance notice of the broadcast (nor was it recorded) and few French citizens living in England heard it – at that time, few Frenchmen had heard of him. 
Nevertheless, history regards the speech as a formative moment of the French Resistance that gave the occupying Germans so much discomfort until they went home four years later.  ....

SND kick off pre-sales on Maigret and The Mysterious Dead Girl


Maigret and the Mysterious Dead Girl is co-produced by Belgian group Scope Pictures and by SND (who will also distribute the film in French cinemas in autumn 2021). The feature film has been pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, and enjoys the support of the Ile-de-France region, where filming will proceed until 19 March.
The EFM will also see the SND sales team - headed up by
Charlotte Bouconb – pursuing pre-sales on two additional titles in production, having kicked these sales off back in January at the Rendez-Vous with French Cinema event (read our news):
