'Shook us to our core': Daughter of Australian professor detained in Qatar pleads for answers

Until almost five months ago, Lukman Thalib was an accomplished public health professor working passionately to fight the coronavirus pandemic in Qatar.
But, according to his daughter Maryam Talib, that all changed on the afternoon of 27 July when at least six people in plain clothes barged into his security complex - “kidnapping style” - and arrested Professor Thalib, 58, and his son, Ismail Talib, 24.
“No words, no paper, no charge, nothing was presented,” she told SBS News from Turkey. 
Ms Talib’s mother and younger sister were also at the complex when the arrests took place. 
“It shook us to our core … we’ve got absolutely no idea what’s been going on. Why on earth things have unfolded the way they are. I’m just hoping it’s a big mistake.” ....

An Australian biostatistics professor who worked as part of a coronavirus taskforce and his son have been detained in Qatar for almost five months.
Lukman Thalib, 58, and Ismail Talib, 24, were arrested at their home in Qatar on 27 July, according to London-based advocacy organisation CAGE, which is assisting the pair.
Professor Thalib was the head of the Department of Public Health at Qatar University and was recently working on the country s Scientific Reference and Research Task Force established in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An Australian public health professor and his son have been detained in Qatar for almost five months without charge, and are receiving consular assistance from the Australian embassy.
Australian citizens Prof Lukman Thalib, 58, and his son Ismail Talib, 24, were arrested at their home in Doha by local authorities on 27 July, and are being kept at an undisclosed location.
The arrests came roughly three months before the United States named another of Prof Thalib’s sons, who lives in Australia, as an alleged “financial facilitator” of al-Qaida. ....
