Stephen McClymont and Jaala Dyer are big believers in serendipity. The two met by chance on an Air New Zealand flight from Sydney to Auckland. They married in a hurry for a visa that would allow them and their respective children to all live together in Asia. The couple share six children between them and call themselves the ultimate blended family.

A chance meeting on a plane, then a long-distance relationship

It turned out Stephen had been an officer in the British Army so he’s got beautiful manners. At the time, I'd had enough of tough guys. I was getting over my marriage breakdown and from doing business in a predominantly male industry. But Stephen was the opposite – he’s thoughtful, sensitive and kind.
I asked for his business card when we landed – I was in sales so was definitely going to chase that lead! We saw each other a few times in Sydney and he came camping with a group of us that summer.
We’ve spent large chunks of our relationship apart – Stephen was transferred with his job to India for nine months and then to Singapore. We joined him in Singapore for two years but I didn’t want the kids to have an expat life, so we came back and Stephen stayed for another two years. We made it work because we prioritised our relationship – we spoke and texted every day and tried to see each other as much as possible.
