By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE A Hewitt-Trussville High School senior started a petition after learning the school would not have a traditional Senior Awards Day. Instead, the school will post information online to showcase senior achievements. Mercy Powers hopes her petition will gain enough attention to allow the powers that be make a change. “This tough year has been a toll on many, especially seniors,” she said on the online petition. “We deserve to be awarded, we deserve to be recognized in person. All we want in our last few months of being a senior is some normalcy. No one wants their last few memories at HTHS to be virtual.” ....
From The Tribune staff reports BIRMINGHAM – The Bryant-Jordan Foundation has released the list of senior student-athletes selected as recipients of the 2021 Bryant-Jordan Regional Scholar-Athlete and Student Achievement Awards. A total of 56 seniors in the AHSAA were selected in each category from nominations submitted by member schools. Eight students, one from each district in each of the state’s 1A through 6A classifications, and four students in Class 7A will receive $3,000 scholarships for their selection. The overall class winner will receive an additional $3,500 scholarship and the overall state winner will receive an additional $4,000 scholarship in each category. By Erik Harris, sports editor BIRMINGHAM The Hewitt-Trussville indoor track and field team claimed first place in both the boys and girls meet on Wednesday in Birmingham. Behind 10 first-place individual finishers, the Huskies stood out among an eight-team field at the Hump Day Octameet in the CrossPlex Athletic Facility. Hewitt-Trussville senior Lea Townsend won the shot put event with a winning throw of 40-0.75 just shy of her state-best throw of 40-4 at the Holiday Invitational in December. Joining the Huskies in that competitive field were Mountain Brook, Helena, Homewood, Oak Mountain, Pelham, Scottsboro and Thompson. Fellow Hewitt senior Julian Collins won the boys long jump event with a leap of 23-6, which matches the 2020-21 AHSAA-leading distance he gave at the Magic City Invitational last month. The Alabama signee also won the triple jump event with a 45-06 effort. Collins holds the state’s top triple jump performance of the season at 47-0.2 ....
