NORTH BROOKFIELD — Months after the local School Committee voted to ditch the school's Indian mascot, voters in a non-binding referendum said they want to adopt the "American Indian Chief" as a symbol for the entire town. Late last year, the School Committee spent hours listening to testimony from indigenous people who said that despite assertions that the mascot honored Native Americans, they found it offensive and hurtful.
