Elder Justice Committee gives advice after charges filed in bail scam targeting older people

Created: April 30, 2021 09:51 PM
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Two men were arrested on Thursday by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. They're accused of attempting to scam an elderly woman out of thousands of dollars.
Investigators have been dealing with a new type of a "cash bail scam," where the actual scammer shows up at their victim's home in person. News10NBC also has some advice from the Elder Justice Committee of Metro Justice.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says since the end of March they've investigated five different incidents of this scam throughout the county.
Here's how it works. Usually, scammers working together will call an elderly person. One of them pretends to be a family member in trouble with the law, for let’s say driving under the influence. Then the other scammer will join the call pretending to be with the police, or an attorney asking for cash to bail out their family member. The victim is instructed to go to their bank, and withdraw a large sum of money.

Bail Scammers Arrested | NewsRadio WHAM 1180

Two Florida men are under arrest after running a bail scam in Monroe County.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says 18-year-old Jamel Aciego and 20-year-old Victor Lopez began scamming elderly Western New York residents. They would call a victim, tell them they were a relative who'd been involved in a car crash and needed bail money. Then a fictitious police officer would get on the phone and explain how to send the money. A "courier" would then arrive at the victim's home to take the cash.
The MSCO says they scammed at least five people since March 22nd, taking more than $106,000.
