The study is based on 20 years of data on Hawaiian coral reefs. It comes just days after it was revealed that the world's oceans had reached their warmest level on record. The researchers modelled that simultaneously reducing problems on land and at sea gave reefs up to six times more likely to grow back after a heat wave than when efforts were conducted separately. But the study also highlights a significant threat: the frequency and severity of coral bleaching as ocean temperatures rise could "simply wipe out the positive effects of local management actions on coral reefs"
