The first results suggested it had secured nearly 72 per cent of the vote and is expected to maintain, or even increase, its dominant position in parliament. Five parties contested the election, but all are considered friendly to the government, meaning the victory for Nour Otan was largely expected. The party has 800,000 members in Kazakhstan, a former Soviet republic four times the size of France but with a population of just under 19 million.
