Doha: The Ambassador of Japan to Qatar, H E Kazuo Sunaga, has hailed the 50 years of diplomatic relationship between the two countries as bold and fruitful. 
“As part of the celebrations both the countries are planning a number of cultural events and due to the coronovirus pandemic we cannot announce the programmes for now,” the Ambassador said during a press meet held in connection with the National Day, at his residence yesterday.
The Ambassador said that one of the most important events taking place during this 50th anniversary will be the inauguration of a Qatar Chair at the University of Waseda in Tokyo in May this year. ....

Japan growth slows in Q4 as economy shrinks 4.8% over year


The economy shrank 4.8 percent in 2020 its first annual contraction since 2009.
Last year, virus restrictions and a 2019 consumption tax hike forced Japan into recession before a third-quarter rebound to 5.3 percent growth, a figure revised upwards slightly on Monday.
Japan emerged from recession in November after recording its worst contraction since comparable figures began to be collected in 1980, exceeding even the pain of the 2008-9 global financial crisis.
Domestic demand and net exports contributed to growth in the fourth quarter, the cabinet office said, adding that spending on housing and corporate investment rebounded.
While Monday s figure for the fourth quarter was above the 2.4 percent predicted by economists polled by Bloomberg, it sounds the alarm for the first quarter of 2021. ....

7.1-magnitude earthquake hits waters off Japan's Honshu island


(MENAFN - Trend News Agency) A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the waters off the east coast of Japan s Honshu island at 10:07 p.m. Saturday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), Trend reports citing Xinhua.
The epicenter, with a depth of 50 km, was monitored at 37.70 degrees north latitude and 141.80 degrees east longitude, said the CENC.

TOKYO. KAZINFORM - Japan s exports in 2020 plunged 11.1 percent from the previous year, marking the largest fall in 11 years, as the new coronavirus pandemic battered global demand for industrial products such as cars, government data showed Thursday, Kyodo reports.

The annual drop was the sharpest since a 33.1 percent dive logged in 2009 in the wake of the global financial crisis, according to a preliminary report by the Finance Ministry. Exports in 2020 stood at 68.41 trillion yen ($660 billion), the lowest level since 63.75 trillion yen in 2012.
By item, the country s car exports plummeted 20.0 percent from 2019, the biggest fall since a 51.3 percent tumble in 2009. Auto parts exports declined 19.1 percent. ....
