Over the house’s nearly 300-year existence on the plot, it’s seen enslaved people labor in the shade-less, expansive fields, Jim Crow laws change the contours of American society, dozens of presidents take office and several generations of the Sellman and Kirkpatrick-Howat families play, work and grow. Now the Smithsonian has unveiled an exhibit marking the property's rich history.
