Six Richmond Public Schools will enter the second semester in January with a new no-phone policy, following mounting concerns about students’ safety and mental health. Hopewell is the area's only other school division with a no-phone policy. School leaders say it’s helping.

In a letter sent to Hopewell High School families this week, school administrators said they "will periodically conduct unannounced searches," assuring the families that these searches will be "conducted in the respectful and non-invasive manner with the utmost consideration for privacy and dignity of all individuals."

High-tech weapons scanners are now in Hopewell middle and high schools.
