The city of Worcester announced Monday morning the creation of the Worcester Green Corps., a public-private partnership focused on cleaning and beautifying Worcester.
The program is a joint effort between the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Central Massachusetts, Worcester Community Action Council, MassHire and the city of Worcester.
Department of Public Works commissioner Jay J. Fink announced that WCAC has committed 25 youth work students for the program for the summer. Five managers will also be hired to oversee the five teams assigned to each district in the city. ....

Worcester’s water filtration plant receives award from state DEP for outstanding energy conservation

Worcester’s water filtration plant is receiving an award for outstanding energy conservation during the 2019 calendar year.
The Robert L. Moylan, Jr. Water Filtration Plant was selected to receive a 2020 Public Water System Award from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. announced.
“The award is largely the result of a project to replace the ozone system which began in late 2018 and continued into early 2020,” Augustus wrote in a letter to city council members. “This equipment replacement coupled with an energy-conscious staff and a commitment to energy conservation has culminated in this much reduced use of electricity and recognition from the Commonwealth’s top environmental agency.” ....

WORCESTER - Jay J. Fink is the new commissioner of the Department of Public Works & Parks Friday, December 18, 2020.
From managing snowfall in the cold Massachusetts winter to cleanup after a hurricane in Miami Beach, Worcester Commissioner of Public Works and Parks Jay J. Fink said using the fundamentals of emergency response is key to bringing conditions back to normal.
After growing up on Cape Cod, Fink went to school in Greater Boston. He attended Northeastern University as an undergraduate studying civil engineering and went to Tufts University for graduate school for a degree in civil engineering with an environmental emphasis. Fink has worked in public works for around 30 years. Before coming to Worcester in November, Fink worked as assistant director of public works in Miami Beach ....
