How do you reduce child care employee turnover? Perhaps with a pay increase.

Three members of the first Idea Accelerator Iowa City cohort studied the child care workforce crisis by implementing a short-term test of a $4 an hour raise for participating child care workers.

COVID-19 in Iowa: Open letter on Iowa City's online learning program

Dear Mr. Degner,
The Iowa City School District has done an excellent job of providing online learning to students. I am a retired educator and have had the opportunity to help my son and daughter-in-law by being present with my son while their three elementary-aged children participate in full-time online learning this school year. They are all students at Lemme Elementary and doing well in kindergarten, second and fifth grades.
I have been so impressed with how organized the teachers are and how positive they are with the children. Some children are in different places on different days so may not have materials for the day, but the teachers share their books on the screen. Some children may be in day care-type settings and the teachers just make it all work. It is a very difficult role and I, as a former educator, cannot imagine doing it. But they do it and do it well.

The America that Sen. Ernst helped create
Sen. Ernst says the mob that ransacked the U.S. Capitol was “incited by false hope.” Wrong! They were incited by people. And these people have names. They are the senator’s friends and colleagues, including several she endorsed.
It was Rudi Giuliani who warmed up the crowd with his call for a “trial by combat.” It was Donald Trump who instructed them to “walk down to the Capitol” and “fight like hell,” because if you don’t, “you’re not going to have a country anymore.” And let’s not forget that none of this evil nonsense would have gained any traction if it weren’t for the rogues’ gallery of Republican opportunists and fellow travelers who spent weeks giving their stamp of approval to Trump’s fiction that the election was stolen. Yes, I’m talking about Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Ron Johnson and others too numerous to name within the length limits of a letter to the editor.
