Edward Albee’s characters can be imbued with different weight and balance, if performers are willing to take the risk. Tony Estrella as George and Jeanine Kane as Martha serve up some bold creative choices.
With all its beauty, ugliness, horror, humor, violence and love, "Topdog/Underdog" — Suzan-Lori Parks' heartbreakingly painful two-person Pulitzer Prize-winning play — opened with a bang Sunday at the Gamm Theatre.
Shakespeare warns early in the first act of Midsummer Night's Dream that 'the course of true love never did run smooth.' In that warning lies the comedic core of the show, and the Gamm Theatre delivers a visually stunning, delightfully playful production that fully captures the Bard's vision. It's a thoroughly enjoyable, punchy take on the classic.
Produced by Front Porch Arts Collective, The Nora@Central Square and Greater Boston Stage Company, the play is a tribute to the music of Fats Waller, a revered pianist and composer with a larger-than-life personality. Jacquinn Sinclair reviews the show.
Other nominees include “The Tempest,” “Tiny Beautiful Things" and “Teenage Dick."
