WHAT IT S ABOUT: Desperate to save his ailing mother, 11-year-old Gunner runs away from home on a quest to find a mythic figure rumoured to have the power to cheat death. WHAT WE THOUGHT: Dealing with illness and death is difficult at any age, even more so when you are a child. In his directorial debut, David Oyelowo tackles these topics with sensitivity, adventure and fantasy. The Water Man centres on Gunner (Lonnie Chavis), a bright-eyed 11-year-old who has just moved to a new city with his mother Mary (Rosario Dawson) and father (David Oyelowo). Gunner is an avid reader and artist and, during the day, zooms around the town on his scooter, looking for inspiration for his graphic novel. When he discovers that his mother has leukaemia, he sets out to help her. He stumbles across Jo (Amiah Miller), telling fantastical stories about a mythical figure, The Water Man, who has cheated death. Together they set out to find him in a remote forest where they have to overcom ....
