newsom towards damage along the coast of santa cruz county, praising city leaders promising help and blaming the weather for at least 17 deaths across california tonight pg and e. is working through the night to restore power up and down the state. tens of thousands are still in the dark with the south bay hit especially hard. good evening. i m julie julie haener mike mibach six significant storms hitting california and the onslaught is taking a toll tonight. the latest numbers from pg and e just a few minutes ago showed nearly 26,000 bay area customers are without power this evening more than 4000 along the peninsula 3000 in the north bay. fewer outages in san francisco in the east bay. the big one it s in the south bay were more than 17,000 customers remain in the dark ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters live tonight in san jose, where pgd is working to repair a transmission tower that came crashing down early this morning, lamonica. pg and e says they ve already rerouted power coming from this tower, and they told us that much of the power outage was due to power poles coming down and trees, toppling on top of power lines now as a five p.m. today, they said about 2100 customers here in this area, we re still out of power. we had a very large eucalyptus tree come down and strike a transmission tower . now the weight of that tower brought down power lines and three different polls that serve electricity to the world oaklyn area. this is what the transmission tower looks like after wind and rain brought down a large eucalyptus tree nearby, destroying the tower. pg and e says the amount of water in the ground weaken the trees foundation, making it easier to topple. this has been a very powerful storm, and it hit the south way very hard just this morning throughout our service area we had about 100 cloud to ground lightning strikes reported a lot of them in the southwest, pg and e reports. 19,248 customers were without power throughout the south bay as of seven p.m. tuesday night. the company says they brought in dozens of crews, including outside contractors to assess the tower damage and remove fallen trees. this man says he lived in an encampment along the loss coddles creek nearby and explains how he escaped being hit by falling trees. you heard the win augusta wind come through. and next thing you know, you heard the trees come from being uprooted and taken down the tower and he grabbed his girlfriend and came out. by the time they came out. they barely traveled down on top of everything and barely missed him . scott bradley says he s lived in willow glen for 70 years, and he s never witnessed anything like this. i began to see the scope of it and the more i looked, the more i could see. i can see. power lines down the quarter mile away, really affected a lot of stuff. it s going to be a big maintenance job, but it looks like we re going to get on it. now the video you see is of a nearby liquor store, and the owner told us off camera that he s concerned about his food spoiling because the refrigerator isn t getting power . pg any also says that people without power should take precautions. they should use flashlights instead of candles. and if they re using a generator , they should put it outdoors so that they re not subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning. now, pg and e. says they don t know exactly when they ll have this tower replaced, but they ll be working on it around. round the clock, mike alright. lamonica peters live tonight in san jose lamonica. thank you for that residents in the small community of coral itos, just north of watson ville have been hit hard by the weather. redwood road. the main way in and out of town is heavily damaged. a 20 ft by 20 ft section of that street collapsed when supporting soil was weakened by the most recent storm. residents of santa cruz county are not completely um unusual are on unaware of these kinds of situations. and so if you live behind the situation on one of those roads, they get trapped. fortunately they re fairly resilient, but we are going to try to get him some relief as soon as possible. and tonight crews are working to repair redwood road. the subcontractor on that project, says he s going to have a temporary patch for residents by use come tomorrow afternoon. the wind and rain turned icy today in san francisco and much of the east bay people sent us their videos, capturing a quick moving hailstorm that left pellet sized ice on the ground. ktvu cristina rendon live now in oakland, with more on the thunder and lightning that put on quite a show today, cristina yeah, julie will wild is a good way to describe it. people were pulling out there phones to snap pictures and take videos of the weather today and the hail. well that was an unexpected turn in the search of rain. we ve had so far. a spin on the bay area s wet weather. tuesday lightning illuminating san francisco and striking sutro tower. then came the hail seen here during the noon hour on union street. by 12 30. it hit the oakland hills following in steve kessler s backyard. amazing first, there was standard first, it was lightning and thunder, and then all of a sudden it starts raining, and then austin starts healing. and the hill lasted for a good four or five minutes. i would think there was so much hail from pellet two piece size , it looked more like snow on the street of the park ridge estates neighborhood. darlene jan took these images from her home. it was just truly amazing. i ve never seen that much hail or thunder and lightning here in the bay area i used to live in sedona, arizona, and we would have monsoon rains. as soon as we heard the thunder and lightning. we ran out front. the hail quickly came and went in. well, most melted. some stayed behind. patches on rooftops and patios. people don t recall ever seeing weather like this, not just the ###, thunder and lightning but the structure of storms we ve had for days now. i think it s unusual. we ve had this much rain in such a short period of time. well it s a long overdue. let s put it that way. tesla has two weather stations in his yard, one on an antenna, the other on a shed. he showed us the app that tracks the rainfall. today, we had 1.5 inches of right. since the start of the year, their neighborhood has received 9.4 inches of rain . problem is it s just it s just so much at one time, if it was spaced out a little bit of probably, you know better for the ground better for everyone else, but we definitely need the one of them. we need the water. and there are a number of images and videos on social media just like this one on twitter showing lightning striking the transamerica pyramid in the city , and you know the hale didn t just hit san francisco and oakland and also stretched into the greater part of the east bay, hitting places like walnut creek and pleasant hill. julie i found myself in a little bit of that. hail as well, christina, you. take a look at this video of the hail in sausalito today it s coming down hammering parts of the city. our chief meteorologist bill martin joins us now and build some unusual weather today in the bay area. it s definitely been an unusual day with scattered heavy thunderstorms in january. you know you get rain in january. you get thunderstorms in january occasionally, but we had a lot of strikes today. a lot of lot of, um hail as well and strong winds with trees down. i want to point out where we are right now, you can see the heavier showers showing up around fairfax. let s back this up a little bit, and you re gonna see it, like push over this way, just a little bit, and this thing is produced. this got some convicted bitty to it right right there. so at 9 20. this thing was pushing some some lightning out of it. looks like it hasn t in a while. so this is where we are now. scattered showers on just north of the golden gate bridge. this next system, um should be, uh, a lot less volatile in terms of thunder and lightning. and this next system being tomorrow morning after about five a.m. but right now, i think we re still seeing some residual moisture in instability. from today s system, which was pretty pretty impressive. so conquered . you re getting some scattered showers as well as if that thing pushed. i don t think concords did. no i m not seeing lightning balls earlier, so, basically, we re seeing that this thing is starting to slow down today s storm and entering into tomorrow s storm, which has got a whole different personality. here we go into the evening and then write about seven am tomorrow morning. there it is. so we re going to get a little bit of a break tonight. we re already seeing that, but we re going to get into this next storm, which again it s very different, whole different personality. it s not gonna be a ton of rain, but it s gonna be rain, and that s the last thing we really need right now. since we have such an abundance of that we ll put all together will time out this for you, too, for your commutes tomorrow. all right, bill. thank you along the santa cruz county coast. the city of capital a is more of these atmospheric rivers and different shapes and forms. depending on different parts of the state with the state already soaked the governor, warning any amount of rain could cause more damage and death. he said he expects the death toll to continue to rise. less people die in the last two years of major wildfires in california that have died since. new year s day. related to this amid this disaster, we ve seen the tears. we ve seen the anger, but we re moving into resilience phase where we re just trying to rebuild. bring that hope back. newsom says the state will continue to assess the damage statewide after these storms and determine if they need to apply for a major disaster declaration from fema that could help with the long term recovery. in the meantime, some of house, but it landed on top of the next door neighbor s garage. there was a lot of damage done there and you have to imagine there s been a lot of rain in the bay area, so this is something we ve been seeing over and over and over again. in fact, the city of san francisco itself has picked up. six months worth of rain in the last two weeks. the mighty atmospheric river winds have been destructive, knocking down this tree and nevado from one neighbor s house. on top of another next door neighbor s home. i spoke to the owner of this house and asked exactly what happened. my wife woke up. the here early tomorrow morning. what we re seeing now are some scattered showers and i mentioned earlier some thundershowers just offshore of mill valley with this system. which is part of today s system of colder system, the next system that comes in slightly warmer and has the potential to bring us a quarter inch to a half inch for most c level cities and then along the coast and the coastal hills, maybe 1 to 2 inches of rain at the most, so it s a typical kind of mild winter storm. okay, so here s the forecast. showers leave tonight about five a.m. we see showers showing up there is that warm not for the extensive mitigation efforts taken over the last five years. i think they learned their lesson in 2017. this wasn t really well done back then. it was unmaintained for many years, and so they refurbished this catch basin, and it basically did his job, which is to catch all this debris. it s doing exactly what it s supposed to do. downstream residents marveled at how effective the katsuyama joins us now live from the newsroom with the developing details. jenna julian mike, definitely not with the city wanted to hear. they sent me a statement this evening, saying they have not officially received notice about their application. for the megaprojects grant. but the u. s department of transportation document we obtained indicates that oakland is not on the list for the initial round of funding. the dream of transforming howard terminal from this into a new oakland, a stadium complex just got thrown a new curveball. oakland had agreed to publicly funded infrastructure and transportation surrounding the privately funded 35,000 seats, 55 acre ballpark complex at the ports of oakland in the city s application for a federal megaprojects grant, the city estimated the waterfront mobility hub portion would cost $366 million and the city s request. it was for 182 million. now it appears the project might not get that funding. ktvu obtained a copy of the preliminary recommendation rankings by the u. s. department of transportation. the oakland project is listed as not recommended a significant setback in the overall funding, according to nola aga, professor of sport management at the university of san francisco. the city of oakland had expected to find around $600 million in order to fund the off site infrastructure that s necessary for howard terminal. in the current economy, it s difficult to find that funding oakland s newly sworn in mayor xiang tao was silent on the matter. tuesday the city s department of transportation director fred kelly, did issue a statement, though saying while we are disappointed to have not been selected in the first round, we believe we put forward a strong application and are well positioned to secure other funding sources, a city spokesperson says oakland has already secured $375 million, which will allow the project designed face to move forward without delay. the city also says the federal mega project grant had never been the sole intended source. and the city has other applications pending that could total more than $100 million when we ve seen recessionary environments or environments with really high interest rates. sport development projects tend to be built a little bit slower. the ancillary development around them tends not to happen at the piece that s expected and late tonight, oakland congresswoman barbara lee sent a statement saying in part quote, i ve worked alongside the city of oakland to make the case to the department that the oakland waterfront project fits the criteria as a nationally important infrastructure project with opportunity to bring jobs and affordable housing to our community. she says she will continue working to get funding for oakland professor august says the ball is in the eighties field if the city can t come up with the funding as to whether they ll stick with their rooted and in oakland plan. or leave for places such as las vegas, as they have suggested in the past. and we will continue to follow like we have been for a long time on this story, janet. thank you. california also applied for mega project funding for high speed rail and that appears at risk as well. california was seeking $500 million to fund the inaugural operating service and the state applied for up to $500 million for the san francisco to los angeles configuration design project. both of those applications were listed as not recommended. new developments tonight in the case of nine year old michaela garrett in 1988. she disappeared from hayward and was later presumed to have been killed. newly sworn in alameda county d. a pamela prices now thrown out special circumstances against the man accused of killing makayla garrett, along with two other women. ktvu crime reporter henry lee explains the implications. david michaud, already a convicted killer, is awaiting trial on charges he kidnapped and killed nine year old makayla garrett from hayward market back in 1988. as well as for allegedly killing two women in fremont two years earlier. but i ve learned alameda county d a pamela price just a week after taking office has dropped all special circumstances in the three killings. those enhancements were lodged by your predecessor, nancy o malley. this means if convicted of three counts of murder, miss will no longer face life in prison without parole or the death penalty, which is already on hold. in california. it s a complete and total betrayal. child safety advocate mark classes. daughter polly was kidnapped in petaluma and killed in 1993. what is it? exactly you re getting when you elect. officials that advocate on behalf of wanting criminals and people that murdered children and women. defense attorney ernie castillo tells me his client is not guilty of the three killings. in a statement, castillo said. in part, each case relies heavily on questionable forensic tactics. her decision doesn t surprise me, in fact, acknowledges the weaknesses in their cases. michaela s body has not been found. critics say tossing the special circumstances also removes leverage the d a could have had in trying to find her remains. retired fremont police lieutenant chuck euler was the lead detective in the 1986 killings of the two women. i think there s exceptions to every rule and if anybody ever deserved maximum punishments is david mesh. this is reckless. this is stunning to me, ktvu legal analyst michael cardoza says. it s not a good idea for a d a. to take any punishment off the table from the get go, especially when mchale is body hasn t been found. it could be a bargaining ship for later. this is the poster case. for putting someone in prison forever to keep him away from society have reached out to d a pamela price but have yet to hear back. if convicted, the defendant could potentially face 75 years to life in prison, which comes with the possibility of parole. henry lee ktvu, fox two news before heading to capitol a today the governor laid out his budget proposal for the 2023 2024 fiscal year in sacramento. governor newsom rolled out of $297 billion spending plan after enjoying a $98 billion surplus. the state is now projecting a $22.5 billion deficit next year to close the gap. the budget delays funding for 20,000 new childcare slots for another year and will reduce some planned investments in climate change funding and zero emission vehicles. but the governor is hoping federal dollars will make up the difference. we could receive an additional 48 billion that substantially go. not specifically but broadly in this bucket. so not only filling that bucket back up. but substantially increasing the total investment thought that was a smart governor. newsom said he was careful to preserve the state s rainy day fund and other budgetary reserves with more than $35 billion in emergency funds in san francisco , employees with the department of public works were scrambling to clear down trees and branches . a large tree came down just around noontime at the intersection of stockton and sutter, right near union square. the tree slammed right into power lines and immunity bus. no injuries were reported, but a neighbor told us he did rush to that bus just to make sure came running out because i was worried about people on the bus and the people on the cars over here. but they all cleared out. and at pearson posed in lower pac heights and other tree came down right onto a car and part of fell. street was also closed for hours due to a fallen tree. sf public works says this is on top of at least 14 trees or large limbs that came down overnight. coming up at 11 covered or not what you need to know about insurance. if you ve had property damage s been seen. the telltale sights and sounds of cleaning up down trees. massive eucalyptus, redwoods oaks and others toppling over by the thousands around the bay area. what s causing them to come down is a perfect storm of factors, all of them spelling trouble for bay area homes and roadways combination, so the dead trees, healthy trees, the trees that are green have a lot of foliage. mixed with high winds, excess moisture, the soil so saturated the trees just can t stand up. dustin wariner s a bay area arborist whose crews have more work than they can keep up with since the recent storm around three am heard a thump. thought at first it was an earthquake. and then i looked out the back window and i saw that there was a new bush against our house. and what it turned out to be was the very top of this eucalyptus. it turns out, the culprit in this case might have struck at any point. this wasn t a case of too much saturation. this was mainly a case of excess wind. wind throw pick the tree up and threw it against the house. years of drought have also taken a toll on many routes systems, leaving them weak and unable to hold on in cases when the ground gets soggy, longer live anywhere you look, there s a massive tree that s fallen over. now for a lot of these, the roots may be perfectly healthy, but the ground is just so saturated. there s nothing to hold them up, expects the trouble will continue and urged anyone with questionable trees to get them inspected by an arborist as soon as possible. right over your bedroom, your kitchen your home. it s an emergency you when it s going to end and with the week ahead looks like and that s still coming up and just a few minutes from now and our newscast gasia frank, roberta. thank you. if she just mentioned this break in the storm is a welcome sight, especially crane . cleanup crews are doing their best working around the clock to clean up what was left behind by wednesday. storm over in pacifica homeowners public works crews had been busy all day, cleaning up a mess after powerful waves washed over the seawall flooding. some of the homes. they re ktvu sally rasmus on beach boulevard near sharp park beach with a look at the damage, ali. hi frank. well earlier this morning, we had a brief period of sunshine and blue skies. now the clouds are already starting to come in. but public works crews have spent the morning with those bulldozers scooping up pile after pile of sand and muck that was washed over the seawall and all the way along beach boulevard into some of those homes. you can see where they have part of the road closed because they re still working to clean things up. one homeowner we spoke with, said the sandbags in front of her garage were no match for the powerful waves during yesterday s storm. that whole street was just full of water, and you looked and saw wave after waves coming through and just i know it crashed. some of our neighbors houses down there, and we were down there earlier and there was nothing you could do at that point, the sandbags weren t gonna help the cameras on the roof of dustin chamberlain s home captured the moment a 30 ft wave washed over the seawall. her husband, david , runs a pacifica camera livestream called pacifica view dot net. i was down here at 9 30 . i was in this room right here with the window and i heard a loud crash and looked up and just saw big wave of water coming towards the house and i was worried it would crash open our window. no one was hurt. but more than 24. hours later, many residents along beach boulevard and city work crews are still cleaning up. it moved the whole car. so over about four or five ft. work crews picked up the pieces of concrete benches that had been carried and crushed by the big waves. storm surge tossed metal garbage cans more than 50 ft, away from the shore drove down here because it was raining to get my paper. in a way it came over and hit my truck over the top of the truck filled up the back of the truck with water. the high surf advisory remained in effect through friday morning, locals advised the visitors to keep their distance for their own safety, even had some sandbags wash away, so you look for damage and also a concern is about people who don t live here who don t know the ocean and come here and you know, really get themselves in dangerous spots. sneaker waves can get you any time. back out here live near pacific appear and sharp park beach, even though people are supposed to stay away from the water and away from this area, when we have waves like this people just can t resist throughout the morning. you know, we haven t had any rain here. so we ve seen a lot of people come out with their phones. some people were flying their drones. it s an impressive and beautiful sight. but you have to keep in mind that you can never turn your back to the ocean like that woman said. the sneaker waves could come up at any time. now there is more rain in the forecast some more stormy weather ahead. so a lot of the folks we talked to say they are keeping and leaving their sandbags out for the next several days, possibly weeks, but again when it comes to a big wave, like the one that came over yesterday, sandbags aren t going to do much. 11 pacifica ali rasmus ktvu. fox two news. alrighty ali. thank you for that. the weather has set some new records, too. data shows the past 10 days have been the wettest for downtown san francisco and more than 100 and 50 years. the department of public works reports. 300 down trees have fallen branches over the past two days, and it s still working to clean those up right now you need is also have busses and trains trapped by down lines and trees, the ground so saturated him. more wet weather is anticipated, residents can expect to see more trees and limbs coming down. and you have high winds with saturated ground that makes the trees more vulnerable to failures. stay away from the power lines called 911, and then let the city officials and the utility crews come out and deal with it. by the way, the department says of trees fall into public property. they will handle it. but when they do come down on private property, the property owner has declared it away as a result of all the recent weather nearly the entire bay areas out of extreme drought , according to the new u. s. drought monitor map, only parts are still in the second highest level of drought. let s compare that with what was going on last month will pop up a different map and show you how the middle map is from two weeks ago. there we go. the one on the far right is from a month ago, as you can easily see, the biggest change here is that there is no more exceptional drought statewide. and, of course, more rain is expected, which is good, because even with all of last week s raid about 98% of our state it is still considered to be in a moderate drought or worse. new at noon to san jose. police contrast to the violent insurrection and assaulted on democracy two years ago on january 6th. earlier on the nine we discussed how the governor might be positioning himself for a political future that could include a run for the white house. in my mind, i believe that he s he s possibly positioning himself for a post 2024 run. um which we ve seen many candidates do on both sides of the aisle were they will somewhat put feelers out there even within their own party as to whether they are a viable candidate movingt surprised, especially given that the partyg president who s all but expressed his desire. hired to run for re election. i would be somewhat surprised if he s strongly positioning himself for 2024 run. newsom is 55 years old . this is his 26th consecutive year in elected office. at noon, the fight for speaker of the house now in its 13th round, and he has lost once again. that would be representative kevin mccarthy. he gained 14 votes today but still failed in the 12th and 13th ballots for house speaker. it s now officially the longest speaker, election and 164 years. still, mccarthy and his allies are hopeful the deadlock will soon be broken. there were some breakthroughs yesterday and last night. i think we had the most productive talks that we ve had all week. urgent negotiations happen behind closed doors, some of the concessions being floated to vote on term limits and lowering the threshold of force a vote to remove the speaker to a single member without a speaker and no members sworn in house is unable to govern. the recent storms several feet of snow and lake tahoe after a break, we ll talk live with the vice president of heavenly ski resort to discuss how they re handling all that snow. plus there s a new dominic covid variant that is quickly spreading around the country. why health experts don t seem too concerned that when we come sierra as we get a break in the weather, but you still need to be careful. if you re driving up. there s going to be a winter storm warning kicks off tomorrow through early next week live look here at highway 50 and south lake their chain controls in this year, both on highway 50 and highway 80. but caltrans says today it s still your best bet to drive up through and to snow country. recent storms dumped a lot of fresh snow throughout this year, and there s more in the forecast at the u. c. berkeley central sierra snow lab video shows a winter wonderland up there of snow covered trees. people here the bear getting ready to go up and the sports basement of berkeley people were lined up to buy and rent, skis, boots and all the snow gear, they need it. they ve only been skiing once before, and my husband s from massachusetts, so he rarely has seen powder so i m super stoked . we ll get some good days for sure that you will see our ski resorts say the recent storms were intense with triple digit wind gusts several feet of snow over the last week. now ski resorts are loving all the snow , but even they could use a bit of a break to get the slopes prepared. and groomed and allow the roads to clear up a bit to get folks safely to the lake tahoe area. so how are the conditions? let s welcome in tom fortune with vail resorts, which owns seven leah tahoe. tom, good to have you with us. great to be here. happy new year. happy new year to you. i can see the lake behind you. that s a good sign. just tell us what have the last couple of weeks been like with all the storms and the holidays to boot. imagine it s been kind of hard to keep up with everything. it has. i won t lie. it s been a bit of a real challenge for the team to keep up with all the snow and the wind and the power outages and the road issues. uh and thank goodness we get these breaks in between, because they are a life saver. i bet well, let s talk about the conditions. i know some of the snow is been pretty wet, which is not music to your ears. but how is heavenly right now? heavenly today is amazing. i ve been on the mountain all morning and it doesn t really get any better than this. with the amount of base and snow we have, uh it s just really, really good right now, and it really kind of depends on the day and the sometimes the hour when you come up really gotta check first, because we the winds can play habit with the lifts and it s really a good idea to check before you come. but today is great. it looks great. despite all the winter weather understand? tourism is actually down in south lake, which blew my mind down some 10% is it just too much snowy weather keeping folks from heading up to ski country? you think well, the ski resorts have been pretty busy, at least the ones that we operate. and um, you know, with all the snow, i think the skiers are coming the rest of the town. yeah, i think maybe people that don t wanna brave the weather may be staying away. but before you wouldn t really know it s any slower here at our resorts. i know 80 and 50. you got to chain up. it s going to be a bit of a mess tomorrow. how about the streets just around south lake and tahoe city? are they pretty well cleaned up now? they re catching up. you know a lot of times, there s two lane roads. now they re one lane in each direction, so it just takes a while to get this cleaned up, and there s also you got to put the snow somewhere. and so we re running out of storage places and so, yeah, it s a it s a challenge. we ve been through two hrs already, and we ve got another one coming for. that s going to be a big one coming up over the next few days, and, uh, but i ll tell you the base in the amount of snow we have is going to be so next few days. yh that s my that s my next know, y home because of the storms, but you were making quite the base up there, maybe maybe the best in decades. yeah 2016 17 inchesd we re already over 200 inches so and we re not even close to halfway so, yeah, if it keeps going, we re going to have one of those years and it s just great. i just can t emphasize enough to check before you come because we do expect to have some lift challenges the next few days. i bet how about your resort? i know northstar. colquitt. is everything open right now because of all this now. yes yeah. every resorts open, uh, highway 88 was closed yesterday. so kirkwood was not opened yesterday. but they re back open today. and north stars weather this storm pretty well, they ve they ve had a good run. and all the terrain is open as well as what i meant. yes 100% everywhere. little jealous. i wish i was up there. go shoot roundabout or gun barrel and have a great day. tom. we really appreciate it. thanks i m heading down. all right, take care. by making that trek up, but roberta time is taken if we want to get up there in decent conditions. absolutely today is the day because weekend through sunday. monday and all the way through next party. let s get down there. we ve got a lot to talk about live whether camera looking out towards the golden gate bridge you can see the flag is on the fly. we ll get to the wind speeds momentarily. but right now you look up. you see the cloud deck roughly between three and 4000 ft. the towers at the golden gate bridge stands 746 ft. we could see it clearly this afternoon. no fog to hamper our view. right now. current air temperatures are in the fifties , not climbing much more than this due to the blanket of cloud cover right now. 56 sfo sixties palo alto mid fifties conquered and also mid fifties comments to rosa through napa into and it cassio. the winds are picking up right now in napa at 10 12 center rosa 12 at oakland international airport, 14 and hayward, so it s a breezy afternoon winds will continue to increase to 20. this is it. this is our storm tracker. it has been spot on each and every day since all the way back to december. 27th when we checked that major storm coming this way, so you got to believe that what it suggests that we have the mostly cloudy skies. i like precipitation noted right now in the form of some light showers. around clear lake and lake county. also mendocino county has been picking up a hit. miss scattered shower just cloud cover for the most part across the bay area, but these are light showers that are now occurring from marin would through san rafael back into larks berg and also right around marin city. mostly cloudy as sprinkling this showers around that 5 86 80 corridor peninsula has a rain shower now occurring around pacifica. now we have this area. low pressure if you were to look up. low pressure and a dictionary. this is the picture you would see. it is perfect. it has the core right here and then it forms like a giant comma. so this is the frontal boundary and this is what pushes and first providing us with the rain showers and that a lot of instability with that core so we start to see the more moderate to heavy rain. we re tracking future cast your friday today relatively dry. mostly cloudy, a hit and miss scattered light shower. nothing ominous at all. then we take you from overnight to midnight. you start to see the rain showers develop. here s your saturday morning the heaviest rain to the north at the golden gate bridge . light showers to moderate showers throughout the morning hours, and then it begins to taper off somewhat before that comes saturday night. so your saturday night will be rain fueled and by midnight, we will have a vigorous front passed through the bay area, providing some pretty heavy rain showers through saturday morning, and then it cuts off your saturday afternoon will be dry, then back on its heels here. the next system. in fact, this computer model takes us all the way through monday morning. pretty much the commute is a washout. if you can stay off the roads on monday morning, it s highly advisable to give you a better picture. we have these storms lined up. okay here s the first one for the weekend, right behind it. we see this gathering . that s another system. this is another storm. this is another one. they re writing a very big ariston jet stream into the bay area of 25 inches of rain between saturday and sunday and what its occasions eight inches of rain and the wettest spots by tuesday, and our soil is saturated winter storm warning goes into effect, as frank was alluding to on saturday through monday, and meanwhile, our temperatures are in the fifties and sixties, the heaviest rain again overnight on saturday to sunday than overnight. sunday through your morning commute. this is a washout day. this is going to be very dangerous as far as accumulation is concerned, also haven t even talked about the gusty winds associated with these systems coming in, and then we do have the rank continuing on tuesday, all the way through next weekend . frank garcia, i can say is wow. okay, roberta. thank you for that. up next human trafficking happens everywhere. that is the new message unveiled on the senate, clare valley transportation authority in occidental. evan sernoffsky ktvu, fox two news. the story is being felt all across the bay area and beyond, and many people are questioning the stability of trees around their home following the death of little leon up in the north bay while we don t know anything about the health of the tree that fell on the boys home, according to the press democrat, the toddler s mother asked the owners of the property if they needed to worry about the trees, and the owners told her they d never seen a redwood fall. two redwoods fell that night reported the scene, evan sernoffsky says the redwood tree that led to the boy s death snapped at the top as we saw in his video, let s talk more about redwoods and trees in general and how to determine their safety. san jose state professor of environmental studies will russell is a good person to turn to and we re glad we have you with us this noontime thank you for being here. yeah thanks for having me as we all you know, digest and grieve over what happened up in the north bay. we have to get into some of the particulars here, the reports that the tree snapped at the top. we ve certainly seen other trees topple over. is that unusual in this case or for a redwood? well, redwood trees are very susceptible to win throw, actually, um, and the number one cause of mortality in redwoods and for redwoods themselves is when through, um and the whole tree can come down or tops of the trees can come down as well. so it s really not that unusual . sounds like it s not a typical , um are there any kind? you know, i know that certain parts of oakland we have a lot of eucalyptus trees are there certain trees in particular that are more susceptible to falling? well yes, an interesting question. i think, um the history of each tree is important and how that tree has been managed, obviously, in a natural forest when a tree falls. that s not a problem, but in a developed area can be a real problem and some of the ways that trees are managed and in developed areas, particularly redwood trees. um, they re often topped or to increase sunlight. um and if you top a redwood to increase sunlight, it sprouts new growth. um and if you don t continually top it that new growth can create heavy branches , which are then very susceptible to wind throw. they can break off very easily and fall. um so we need to think about that when we re managing trees for other reasons what the effects might be later in a storm event trees and i m thinking of trees other than redwoods have these really wide broad canopies are those kind of more firm. only anchored. and what about the saying that the root system is about identical to what we see on top and does that help? well redwoods. unfortunately like eucalyptus trees have very shallow root systems. in fact, they can have a wide root system, but it s very shallow and win. um the soil is saturated as it is now trees can topple over quite easily. so how do we know when a tree around our home or property is in danger? it s very difficult to know for particular tree. but if it has, uh, these sort of multiple branches near the top. that s a sign that something should be addressed. and um, if it s leaning, certainly that s a sign that it should be addressed. but generally speaking, you can use the same thought process that used for fire defense ability for storm defense ability. if the tree might be a danger in a fire, it could also be a danger in a storm so sort of keeping it clearing a defensible space around your house is very important. what s your assessment of what we ve been seeing happen around the bay area when it comes to the storms and the trees that are down? yeah i mean, it s a particularly intense storm event. um the amount of rain was significant, but i think the amount of wind was was even more of a factor in this case. i know we have more rain coming. i m hoping that rain will come with a little less wind and that could at least know, our meteorologists are predicting rain and stormy weather out till january we be t an even more dire situation as we get deeper in deeper into this rain. it s certainly possible and i d encourage people who are living in the forest to look around at that the trees surrounding their house doing assessment when it s not. it looks like there could be a hazard or any trees that are starting to slump over. it s really important to address that ahead of time. state professor will russell. we could talk for an hour because this is the homeowners main concern. we appreciate your time this noon hour. thank you. thank you. the man accused
