Deaths from cough syrup: India prescribes tests before export

Nearly 90 children in The Gambia and Uzbekistan have died in connection with cough syrups from India. The WHO detected toxins in the drugs in 2022 - now the Indian Ministry of Health is reacting. From June 1, each cough syrup must have a certificate of analysis issued by a government laboratory before it can be exported. The notice named seven government laboratories to which samples can be sent for testing, as well as other government laboratories certified by a national accreditation body. The two substances are used, for example, in antifreeze and brake fluids, but also in some pharmaceutical products as a cheaper alternative to glycerine. ....
