Mānuka honey dispute: Te Pitau Trust rejects trans-Tasman agreement suggestion

The Australian Manuka Honey Association has called for a boycott of New Zealand's honey, unless it changed its mind on sharing the name.
Australian Trade Minister Dan Tehan is asking his New Zealand counterpart Damien O'Connor for the two countries to work together and reach a trans-Tasman agreement to market the product to the world.
However, Te Pitau chair Victor Goldsmith said it was acting on behalf of iwi to protect mānuka and it was not going to sell its culture to Australia.
"We've spent a lot of time and money getting us to this position, yes and it is legal, it is litigious, so we need to work through that process because they've gone too far down that track, at the eleventh hour for them to come to 'let's sit around the table and work that through.' No," Goldsmith said.

NZ mānuka honey makers 'welcome opportunity' for dialogue with Australian producers

Tehan discussed the matter with New Zealand's Agriculture Minister Damien O'Connor on Monday.
"I... propose that the Australian and New Zealand governments jointly facilitate a workshop with our respective manuka honey industries," Tehan told ABC News.
"Including in areas such as industry development, research, joint marketing, technology sharing and addressing fraudulent honey products."
John Rawcliffe, spokesperson for New Zealand's Mānuka Honey Appellation Society says while he hasn't heard any official word on the matter he would "absolutely welcome this opportunity".
"I think it's positive to get to the table," Rawcliffe told Newshub.
"We have a lot of good science that we're willing to share with Australia."

New Japanese rules for NZ honey driven by consumer expectations - industry

He said research had shown that while glyphosate was not found in mānuka, "miniscule" traces had been found in other types of honey, but "at such a low level there is no danger here whatsoever".
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies glyphosate - which is used around the world as a weed killer -  as being "probably carcinogenic" to humans.
But MPI food risk assessment manager at New Zealand Food Safety, Andrew Pearson, told RNZ that New Zealand Food Safety has concluded there is no credible risk to users of the weedkiller or to consumers of produce with residues of glyphosate in compliance with New Zealand's maximum residue levels.

Japan warns it will block NZ honey shipments if glyphosate limits breached

Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has told the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) that if 5 per cent of imported honey exceeds its glyphosate limit, it will stop the honey coming into Japan.
MPI food risk assessment manager at New Zealand Food Safety, Andrew Pearson, said as a response, glyphosate testing would be required before any New Zealand honey was exported to Japan.
"Testing must be carried out in a laboratory approved to test for glyphosate in accordance with MPI's requirements," Pearson said.
"If test results are not provided, MPI will not grant export certification for that consignment of honey."
