PULLMAN - Two summers ago, prairies burned as towns on the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation filled with smoke from the 54-square-mile Chuweah Creek Fire.
The Colville Reservation was one of six Washington reservations split during the 2011 redistricting, including the Yakama, Puyallup, Chehalis, Swinomish and Nisqually Reservations.
The College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences will offer new scholarships for incoming Native American students next year, providing tangible support for students to achieve their goal of higher education. Elizabeth Perez, CAHNRS director of recruitment and retention, said the program will hopefully be the first step in supporting more Native American students.

The same gun, she says, that he pulled on her when she tried to escape. She shot him in self-defense, she says. She wasn t going to let him hurt her again, she tells police. So once he fell asleep, she took the gun, along with his drugs and money. He reached through the window, shouting at her, threatening her and grabbing her. Then, she says, he saw the gun and tried to wrestle it away from her. She pulled the trigger.
